How to measure for a plissé fly screen
About five minutes per opening with a metal tape measure. Send us your sizes and a photo, and we check every measurement before anything is made.
What you need
- A metal tape measure — not a fabric one, it stretches and can be 1–2 cm out
- A pen and paper, or your phone, to write the sizes down
- A stepladder or a sturdy chair if the opening is tall
- 5–7 minutes for each opening
Measure from inside
Take every measurement from inside the room — the side where the window or door opens. On a window, open the sash first: the screen goes on the opening part.
Measure the width in three places
Measure the clear opening from the left inner edge of the frame to the right inner edge — at the top, in the middle and at the bottom. Don't include the frame itself or the wall around it. Write down the smallest number.
Measure the height in three places
From the top inner edge to the bottom inner edge (on a door, down to the threshold) — on the left, in the middle and on the right. Again, write down the smallest number. Openings are rarely perfectly square.
Write the sizes down — don't add anything
Send us the clear opening size, exactly as you measured it. The screen is made slightly larger than the opening so its frame sits neatly and stays clear of the handles — we add that margin ourselves, so you don't need to.
- Write the sizes in millimetres, width first, and round down — for example 1152 × 1422 mm.
- The online calculator uses centimetres: 1152 mm = 115 cm.
Check what's in the way
Look for anything in the fitting area: window handles, child locks, opening restrictors and stays; on doors, the handle, a door closer, skirting boards or a raised threshold. Mention it in your message.
- Doors: tell us the height and shape of the threshold — a door screen runs on a low rail at the bottom.
- Doors and large openings: tell us which way the screen should fold — to the left, to the right or from the centre.
- Wide sliding or panoramic openings: give the total width. Very wide openings can be made with two panels that fold to the sides.
Send your sizes and photos of each opening: the whole opening from the front, and a close-up of the frame and floor. We'll check your measurements before production.

Common measuring mistakes
Mistake: Measuring to the wall reveals or the outer edge of the frame
Result: The screen is bigger than the opening and won't fit.
Mistake: Adding a margin yourself
Result: We add the margin when we make the screen, so it would be added twice and the screen would be too big.
Mistake: Measuring in one place only
Result: If the opening isn't square, the screen won't fit along its full length.
Mistake: Using a fabric tape instead of a metal one
Result: The sizes can be 1–2 cm out.
Mistake: Rounding up
Result: The screen won't fit in the opening.
Mistake: Mixing up width and height
Result: The screen is made with the wrong proportions.
